Reading Notes: Faerie Queene, Part B

As Britomart journeyed night came. She was not afraid. Instead, she got stronger. Then a storm came through the town she was in appeared these figures.

She then met Ease. After she met Fancy, Desire, Doubt, Danger, Mischief and Mischance. They all wore clothing of nature, whether it be plums or bear skin. Danger left and Fear came along. Then came Hope. Dissembling and Suspicion came along together after the others. Dissembling was kind and beautiful and Suspicion was ugly. Greif and Fury came next and Pleasure and Displeasure followed closely behind. After the six couples came by, a beautiful woman came. She was led in by Spite and Cruelty. Love followed. Then the rest came in: Reproach, Repentance, and Shame. Strife and Anger, Care and Unthriftness, Loss of Time and Sorrow, fickle Change, Disloyalty, Rioting, Poverty. The last one to came in was Death-with-Infamy.

Not one of them saw her hiding. They entered a chamber and after they passed, Britomart followed them in. She spotted the Enchanter who spotted her back and they drew their weapons and fought. Britomart was injured slightly. Britomart freed a lady named Amoret, who the Enchanter had been keeping prisoner.

Britomart escaped the Enchanter Castle and returned to where she had left Sir Scudamour and her old nurse, Glauce. They were not there. Sir Scudamour left because he believed she had died. She and Amoret set out to look for the two. They got to know each other. Amoret was held because she refused to leave her husband for the Enchanter. They became best friends.

Sir Scudamour was the husband of Amoret. They two ran into knights and they found out the knights hated Sur Scudamour. They fought believing Britomart was a knight and Sir Scudamour came along. He saw his wife with the knight, who was actually Britomart but he didn’t know this. During the fight he killed beat Glauce for revenge.

Many events took place after including a tournament and feast. The men even showed of their women. Britomart showed of Amoret. But she was still stuck on searching for her knight. Sir Scudamour was still alive and jealous of Britomart so he set out for revenge. Scudamour found them again and began to fight. Britomart could no longer use her enchanted spear.


As they were fighting, the knight she had been searching for appeared. In the fight her helmet was knocked off and her real identity was revealed. Artegall and Scudamour asked for forgiveness. Scudamour was happy to know his jealousy was false. Artegall was not finished with his journey, but he promised Britomart he would return. However, after time they grew a apart and Britomart returned to Scudamour to help him find Amoret.
